October will mark the 1 Year Anniversary of disconnecting our cable! And here we are, 12 months later, and we've decided to help others accomplish the freedom that we now feel. I speak from FIRST HAND experience that it can be tough, not feel worth it, and at times you'll be tempted to give in to the first "great introductory deal" that you see... You won't do it though. Especially if you do it for the right reason(s) which we find are biblical.
For us it all started with reading Crazy Love, by Francis Chan. He does a phenomenal job of describing what was us , lukewarm Christians. Someone that was fine with being "Godly" enough. Doing what we thought made us a good Christian, AS COMPARED TO other Christians. And when we say "doing" or "being," We're not necessarily referring to works - but rather are we truly LIVING as Christ commands of us? So, we challenged ourselved to read through the Gospels, and what we read left us no choice. Our family was going to disconnect cable, and we didn't care if it was the middle of football season.
That decision has changed our lives. We are more involved as a family, both inside and outside the walls of our home. We've seen our focus change towards serving others, and thanks to the time not spent watching TV, and the dollars not spent paying for it, we are able to do much of what we have always wanted to... and we're just getting started!
From a "reality" perspective, it's definitely been a season of transition with learning what to do instead of watching cable. We won't deceive - we didn't stop watching TV 100%. In fact, we still watch a couple of shows a week, but we do so via the FREE "over the air" HD and Digital broadcast feed. Again, our decision to do this was NOT based on moral judgement or legalism. We wanted to see what would happen if we did this, and now (based on those results) we want to see what will happen if you'll make that commitment too!

An Open Letter...
Dear Fellow Believer and Follower of Jesus Christ,
Our hearts pen this letter for only one purpose and that is so you can grow and mature in your relationship with Jesus Christ. During the last year, my wife and I have committed ourselves to finding a way in which we can impact the Body of Christ, and through much prayer and patience, we are blessed to announce the launching of Project Disconnect: Removing Cable and Satellite Subscriptions from our Homes!
The goal of Project Disconnect is simple, and that is to see fellow believers strengthen their commitment to Christ by disconnecting their existing cable and/or satellite service. Yes, that’s correct – we’re asking you to give up cable TV! I know that sounds absolutely absurd, and for some it’s not even a rational request; but we believe that Christ is clear in what He asks of us, and specifically warns us of the dangers in the world.
1 John 2:15-17, says, “Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world-the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride in possessions-is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.”
We lock our doors, and set our home monitoring systems to protect us from the physical dangers in the world. Yet, what do we do to guard our hearts and our minds? Is television anything more than a portal to the mental, emotional, and visual dangers of the world? We would suggest television lowers our sensitivity to violence and sex; it shapes our morals, our views on women/men, and it defines how we feel about ourselves. What’s worse – we PAY FOR IT! We pay to have “the world” directly placed in our homes, even at the expense of our relationships (family, spousal, and heavenly).
In Matthew 13:7, Christ speaks on the parable of the sower who went out to sow, “Other seeds fell among thorns, and the thorns grew up and choked them.” He then explains in Matthew 13:22, “As for what was sown among thorns, this is the one who hears the word, but cares of the world and the deceitfulness of riches choke the word, and it proves unfaithful.”
Our cause is not legalistic. In fact, we don’t ask that you remove television completely unless you so choose. Did you know that HD and digital television is available FREE? What we do ask is that we, believers of Jesus Christ, acknowledge that we’re paying for access to something of which He warned against; and instead of paying $50 - $300 per month for that access we take a stand.
Here’s our five step process:
Step 1) Cancel your subscription
Step 2) Access HD and Digital programming with the use of an indoor and/or outdoor antenna (optional)
Step 3) Decide what you’ll now do with your $$$
Step 4) Become involved
Step 5) Encourage others
Project Disconnect is a non-profit organization. Your contribution to Project Disconnect is not financial! It is made through commitment and sacrifice. We hope that you’ll consider taking this bold step in faith for your family, and your community!
